What Happened

A marsh fire burning near Silver Eagle Road in Groveland expanded to approximately 200 acres Wednesday as the Florida Forest Service continued an air-and-ground response.

The incident, identified as the Silver Eagle Road Marsh Fire, is burning within a much larger marsh and swamp area. Florida Forest Service resources were working alongside Lake County Fire Rescue as crews monitored the fire’s movement and protected nearby developed areas.

Why It Matters

The location of the fire makes suppression more difficult than a typical roadside brush fire. Marsh terrain limits where firefighters and equipment can safely operate, increasing the importance of aircraft and heavy equipment.

The fire is also burning close enough to developed areas that crews have positioned resources with structure protection in mind. As of the latest Florida Forest Service information available to LCN, no evacuation order had been announced.

Who It Affects

Residents in and around the Silver Eagle Road area may see smoke, firefighting aircraft and increased emergency activity while operations continue.

People outside the immediate area may also see the smoke column from other parts of South Lake County.

Officials are asking the public to stay away from the active response area so firefighters and equipment have room to operate.

What Changes

The response has expanded as the fire has grown. Two helicopters have been assigned to conduct water drops, while three dozers are being used as part of the ground operation.

The Florida Forest Service is also reminding the public not to fly drones near an active wildfire. Unmanned aircraft can create a hazard for firefighting aircraft and disrupt aerial suppression operations.

What’s Next

Crews will continue working the Silver Eagle Road Marsh Fire while monitoring its size, movement and potential impact on nearby areas.

LCN will continue watching for updated information directly from the Florida Forest Service, including changes in acreage, containment, structure threats or evacuation information.

This article will be updated as additional official information becomes available.
